Fishermen in Red Sea are missed & forgotten tragedies

Fishermen in Red Sea are missed & forgotten tragedies
[19/February/2023]

SANA'A February 19. 2023 (Saba)- Yemeni fishermen's journeys on the Red Sea coast are no longer safe.
It has become a journey of life and death, not only because of the huge waves and strong winds; rather, it is a result of the killings, kidnappings, imprisonment and torture that they are subjected to by the battleships of the American-Saudi aggression and its mercenaries and their allies.

Therefore, since March 2015, the fishermen have had to bid farewell to their families when they decide to embark on a journey in search of a living in the middle of the sea, because they may not return again.

Their suffering is not limited to kidnapping, the looting of their boats and equipment, and their torture in Saudi prisons. The suffering includes the loss of their lives and the destruction of their boats; as a result of being targeted by the aggression with air strikes.
In addition to being exposed to naval mines, their lives are lost and their boats are destroyed and hundreds of them were killed.

Insan Organization for Rights and Freedoms, in an investigative report entitled "Unseen Tragedies in the Red Sea", highlighted the violations of the coalition and some neighboring countries against Yemeni fishermen.

The report said that the organization's investigation team "monitored heinous crimes against fishermen at the hands of the coalition forces and the entities funded by it, as well as the Eritrean forces."

The report documented four forms of crimes and violations against fishermen. Represented in the naval blockade, which prevented fishermen from practicing their profession to earn a living, arrest and kidnapping, direct killing and the involvement of a group of fishermen hidden by the coalition in exchanges for prisoners of war.

The report added, "The violations against fishermen detained in the coalition's prisons and its affiliated groups do not end here only, as there is another party that practices violations, which is the state of Eritrea, which is involved in kidnapping, harassment, arbitrary imprisonment, depriving fishermen of the most basic rights, in addition to using them in actions that harm their humanity.”

Yemeni media reports quoted fishermen who were released from Eritrean prisons, that some of them were used to serve the homes of Eritrean officials, in addition to being subjected to various types of torture.

The organization confirmed that the aggression countries directly killed 274 fishermen, some of whom were targeted while fishing in the Red Sea by warplanes, indicating that 476 fishing boats were destroyed in the Red Sea.

The report stated that 215 fishermen from Al-Bahri fishermen were disabled during their kidnapping by the aggression coalition forces or their local armed groups.

The report recounted the testimony of M.K., one of the fishermen released by a group funded by the Aggression Coalition.
Where he said that he was "severely tortured, nails pulled out and beaten with sticks in his detention center in the Medi region, and that there are other fishermen who are tortured and deprived of the most basic rights."

The report revealed fate eleven fishermen's fate, who were claimed by the American battleship (USS Forrest Sherman) to have rescued them from drowning and handed them over to the Coast Guard in the port of Nishtun in Al-Mahra province in late November 2019, indicating that those fishermen were handed over to the aggression coalition forces, and they are now located in A prison in Khamis Mushait, Saudi Arabia, for prisoners of war.

The father of one of those kidnapped was quoted as confirming that his son and a group of his relatives and friends were late while fishing, and they only learned of their fate through news websites that reported that the American barge had rescued 11 fishermen.

He said, "A few days later, my son called and told us that he was in Al-Mahrah, and he did not mention any other details. A few months later, he called from a Saudi number, and told us that he was in Khamis Mushait prison."

The father added, "We were surprised by the presence of my son and his colleagues in Khamis Mushait prisons, next to the prisoners of war."

The report stated that about 2,000 fishermen have been kidnapped during the past 7 years, including children who were fishing with their families, some of whom have been released, and some of them are still kidnapped, whose fate is unknown.

The organization indicated that its team interviewed a group of released children who confirmed that they had been subjected to heinous violations against children, including physical and psychological torture.

The child, Muhammad Musa, (15 years old), said that he was hunting with his family, and was kidnapped with his uncle by a local group funded by the Aggression Coalition, and he was severely beaten in the head and face, in addition to threatening to kill him.

The organization concluded that violations continue to this day against Yemeni fishermen in the Red Sea.

The international community bears responsibility for what happens to the Yemeni fishermen who sail the sea, risking their lives in search of their livelihood, and what feeds their families, in light of a humanitarian crisis that the United Nations described as the worst in the world, but thousands of them lost their jobs and were deprived of their only source of income due to the crimes of aggression and its mercenaries.
