SANA'A November 22. 2022 (Saba) - The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation reaffirmed on Tuesday the banning of importing potato seeds from abroad as a result of Yemen reaching the stage of self-sufficiency in these seeds, which fully covers the needs of the local market.
A statement issued by the ministry stated that the General Company for the Production of Potato Seeds has been able in recent years to expand its activities in the field of potato seed production and bring it to the stage of self-sufficiency, as it has been able to produce new and diverse varieties of high quality and in very large quantities to cover the local market.
The statement indicated that the ministry, although it had informed traders and importers of potato seeds to prevent imports, there are a number of traders and importers who have imported quantities of those seeds from foreign companies.
According to the statement, "in the interest of the ministry to protect those importers and prevent them from being exposed to losses, it had to allow them to enter the shipments that were imported for the last time, with their commitment not to import potato seeds again, in a way that does not expose them to losses."
The ministry called on importers to buy local potato seeds to encourage the local product and all possible facilities will be provided in this regard.
It stressed that despite the facilities provided to importers of potato seeds, it was surprised by some of them criticizing the ministry's decision, which serves the country's interest and encourages the local product and attempts to direct criticism and incite farmers against the ministry and its policy of encouraging the production of local potato seeds.
The Ministry again called on all traders and importers not to import potato seeds from abroad, except with the written approval of the Ministry, in a way that does not expose them to losses
It noted that its plan includes continuing development in the productivity of potato seeds, which has reached self-sufficiency, and also aims to encourage the productivity of various crops to reach sufficiency and reduce the import bill that incurs the state huge amounts of money in a way that translates the directions of the leader of the revolution and the President of the Supreme Political Council in this regard.
