Jakarta – Saba:
A volcano in eastern Indonesia erupted on Friday, sending a column of volcanic ash approximately 10 kilometers into the air, just four weeks after a previous eruption disrupted flights in Bali.
The Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano, standing at1,584 meters on the tourist island of Flores, erupted at 20:48 local time (12:48 GMT), according to Indonesia's National Volcanology Agency. The ash plume reached 10 kilometers above its summit.
- Mohammad Wafid, head of the agency, stated the eruption resulted from gas buildup in recent weeks.
- Authorities warned of potential lahars (mudflows of volcanic debris), posing significant risks to riverside communities, especially during heavy rains.
- No casualties or damage have been reported yet.
- Tourists and residents are advised to avoid activities within a 6 km radius of the volcano.
- Last month, the volcano ejected ash 18 km high, forcing 24 flight cancellations at Bali’s airport.
Indonesia lies on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", making it prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity.
