German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said on Friday that settler attacks on Palestinian areas are not unilateral acts, but rather organized terrorism and crimes against Palestinians, and that they must be monitored and stopped.
During his visit to the town of Taybeh, east of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank, and briefed on the settler attacks in the town, Wadephul said that there are reports that the Israeli army did not prevent these attacks, or may even have participated in them, which worries the German government, according to the official Palestinian News Agency.
During the visit, the German minister viewed the damage to the Al-Khader Church, which was attacked last month. On July 7, settlers deliberately set fires near the town's cemetery and the historic Church of St. George, which dates back to the fifth century AD.
Vadephul called on Israel to abide by international law, prosecute aggressive settlers, and provide protection to Palestinian citizens.
He stated that the German government supports the establishment of a Palestinian state, participates in any state-building process, and is not against early recognition.
