More than 700 doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers in Italy's Tuscany region have launched a symbolic fasting campaign to protest the genocide and deliberate starvation of the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.
According to the Italian newspaper Corriere Fiorentino, participants began their rotating fast on Tuesday in front of over 40 hospitals and medical centers across Tuscany, abstaining from lunch during their work breaks as an act of solidarity with Gaza’s civilians.
The doctors and nurses raised banners condemning the Israeli aggression, describing the situation in Gaza as a systematic campaign of extermination and starvation. They also shared photos of themselves in front of their healthcare institutions.
The campaign organizers stated in a press release: "We cannot remain silent in the face of the tragedy in Gaza after 21 months of war and over 60,000 victims, many of them children. People are now dying of hunger."
The statement added: "The Israeli government is committing genocide, deliberately starving an entire population."
Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli occupation forces, backed by the U.S. and Europe, have continued their aggression on Gaza, bombing hospitals, buildings, towers, and Palestinian civilian homes—destroying them while families are still inside—and blocking access to water, food, medicine, and fuel.
