Khan Younis - Saba:
The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) announced the operation of the intensive care unit (ICU) at Al-Mawasi Field Hospital, starting at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday. This step aims to enhance the emergency medical response in the Al-Mawasi area, which houses hundreds of thousands of displaced people from Khan Younis Governorate.
Haider Al-Qudra, PRCS Executive Director in the Southern Governorates, explained that the operation of this vital department comes in direct response to the increasing pressure on the hospital, given the large daily influx of injured patients, many of whom require intensive care after surgery or as a result of critical injuries.
He pointed out that the intensive care unit, which includes four intensive care beds equipped with ventilators and two intermediate care beds, was built and fully equipped through engineering and technical efforts by PRCS staff, utilizing purely local resources, despite the siege and severe resource shortages. The PRCS administration is currently working to increase the number of beds according to available resources.
Al-Qudra emphasized that the opening of this department represents part of the PRCS's ongoing commitment to providing medical care to citizens in the most affected areas, despite the worsening logistical and humanitarian challenges in the Gaza Strip.Al-Mawasi Hospital is one of the most prominent emergency medical projects fully completed by Red Crescent teams following the mass displacement from Khan Younis to the area.
The hospital's current capacity is approximately 70 beds and includes several vital departments, including operating rooms, a medical laboratory, an x-ray department, and specialized clinics.
The Society's teams are currently working to increase the number of beds to 150 if large generators are available to operate all medical facilities.
