Thailand accused Cambodia on Wednesday of committing a "flagrant violation" of the ceasefire agreement reached between the two sides to halt border fighting, asserting that Cambodian forces "launched a nighttime attack with small arms and grenades."
The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement: "This represents a blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement," adding that "this aggressive act constitutes yet another clear violation of the ceasefire agreement by Cambodian forces and demonstrates their lack of good faith."
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced on Monday that, following negotiations in Kuala Lumpur, Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to a ceasefire, which will take effect at midnight local time. At the same time, the two sides discussed other steps to de-escalate the border conflict.
Clashes erupted between the two sides for five days over several ancient temples in disputed areas along their 800-kilometer border.
Relations between the two countries deteriorated sharply following clashes on May 28 along a disputed section of the border, in which a Cambodian soldier was killed.
