Beijing - Saba:
China's Tsunami Warning Center issued a 'yellow' tsunami warning for eastern China and Taiwan on Wednesday after a powerful earthquake struck off the coast of Kamchatka, Russia.
The Kamchatka Peninsula experienced earthquakes of approximately 8.7 magnitude today, the strongest earthquake recorded in the region since 1952, according to the Geophysical Survey Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
China Central Television quoted the Tsunami Warning Center as saying that the earthquake had triggered a tsunami that is expected to affect the coast of Shanghai, the southern city of Zhoushan in Zhejiang Province, eastern Taipei, and several other areas.
China has a four-level severe weather warning system, with red representing the highest level of danger, followed in descending order by orange, yellow, and blue. Tsunami waves earlier struck parts of the coasts of Kamchatka and the Kuril Islands, while tsunami warnings were issued for most of Japan's east coast, and the US states of Alaska, California, Oregon, and Hawaii.
