Geneva – Saba:
The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, called on Tuesday for the urgent entry of food and medicine into the Gaza Strip to halt deaths caused by famine due to the Israeli occupation army’s siege.
In a post on X platform, Ghebreyesus stated that famine, malnutrition, and disease in Gaza have led to a rise in hunger-related deaths. He stressed the critical need for large-scale food and medical aid to prevent further deterioration of the situation.
Ghebreyesus referenced the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report, issued today, which warned that "Gaza is facing the worst-case famine scenario."
He added, "Famine, malnutrition, and disease are driving an increase in hunger-related deaths."
The WHO chief renewed his call for a ceasefire in Gaza, stating, "Peace is the best medicine!"
Earlier on Tuesday, a UN report indicated that all Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are experiencing acute food insecurity amid the ongoing genocide and Zionist blockade.
The report highlighted that 100% of Palestinians in Gaza are facing severe levels of acute food insecurity.
Meanwhile, cases of malnutrition and starvation continue to flood Gaza’s hospitals, with 900,000 children in Gaza suffering from hunger, including 70,000 severely malnourished.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) warned that malnutrition among children under five has doubled between March and June due to the Israeli blockade on Gaza.
With U.S. and European support, the Israeli occupation army has continued its genocidal war on Gaza since October 7, 2023, killing 60,034 Palestinian civilians, mostly children and women, and injuring 145,870 others—figures that remain non-final, as thousands remain trapped under rubble or in inaccessible areas, unreachable by rescue teams.
