The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, called on world governments on Sunday to exert all possible forms of pressure on the Israeli occupation authorities to permanently halt the massacres in the Gaza Strip.
According to the UN News website, Türk stressed the need for countries to take concrete steps to ensure Israel’s compliance with its obligations to provide adequate food and life-saving basic necessities for the people of Gaza.
He expressed outrage at the daily "unfathomable" tragedy in Gaza and the West Bank, condemning "the destruction, killing, and dehumanization of Palestinians day after day." He added, "Gaza has become a scene of misery—deadly attacks and total devastation, where children are dying before the eyes of the world."
Türk noted that, according to medical sources in Gaza, over 200,000 Palestinians have been killed or injured since October 7, 2023—equivalent to nearly 10% of the population. He also denounced the killing of more than 300 UN staff members while carrying out their duties due to the occupation forces’ military operations.
The High Commissioner affirmed the UN’s readiness to support Palestinians in building their state on the foundations of human rights and the rule of law.
"When the time comes, dedicated programs to support victims and survivors will be among the key pathways toward achieving justice and accountability," he said.
