The World Health Organization (WHO) has revealed that malnutrition rates in the Gaza Strip have reached alarming levels, warning that malnutrition is following a dangerous trajectory, with a sharp rise in fatalities recorded this month.
In a press statement on Sunday, WHO stated that most malnutrition-related deaths occurred either before reaching hospitals or shortly after arrival, with victims showing extreme emaciation.
The organization emphasized that the deliberate siege on Gaza and delays in aid deliveries have cost numerous lives, adding, "Nearly one in five children under the age of five in Gaza City suffers from acute malnutrition."
WHO stressed that the surge in malnutrition cases is overwhelming medical centers and pushing the healthcare system toward collapse. The remaining medical facilities in Gaza are operating beyond capacity and are on the verge of running out of fuel.
The organization also noted that healthcare workers in Gaza are exhausted, and the collapse of water and sanitation systems is accelerating the spread of diseases.
The humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza continues to escalate unprecedentedly, with the situation deteriorating further amid a complete closure of crossings for over 140 days. This comes despite a previous ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement that the Israeli enemy has failed to implement.
Earlier in the day, the Ministry of Health reported that Gaza’s hospitals recorded six new deaths due to starvation and malnutrition in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of starvation and malnutrition-related fatalities to 133, including 87 children.
With American support, the Israeli enemy forces are committing genocide against the people of Gaza through killing, starvation, destruction, and forced displacement, in blatant defiance of international appeals and rulings by the International Court of Justice demanding an end to the war.
