The U.S. Geological Survey stated that the earthquake's epicenter was in the Rat Islands, west of Alaska, at a depth of 134.2 kilometers.
Alaska lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region where tectonic plates collide, resulting in intense seismic and volcanic activity.
