Seoul - Saba:
At least 23 people have died and five others are missing due to the heavy rains that hit South Korea last week, while the search for five missing persons continues, according to the latest toll announced by the Ministry of Interior on Thursday.
The "Yonhap" agency reported that four new bodies were recovered, including three in Sancheong town in South Gyeongsang Province, and one in Gapyeong town in Gyeonggi Province, raising the toll from 19 to 23 victims.
The authorities made intensive efforts to deal with the aftermath of the disaster, as they received 12,791 reports of damage to public and private facilities, and 6,487 of them were dealt with urgently.
The floods also led to the displacement of more than 15,000 people to temporary shelters during the period from July 16 to 19, and 2,243 people have not yet been able to return to their homes.
A severe heat wave followed the rain wave, worsening the situation, as 136 cases of heat-related illnesses were recorded as of July 22, increasing the suffering of the affected people and complicating relief efforts.
