Spanish City of Malaga Withdraws from Hosting 2030 World Cup Matches

Madrid - Saba:

The Spanish city of Malaga announced on Sunday its withdrawal from bidding to host matches of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Francisco de la Torre, the mayor of Malaga, stated that the decision came after a series of meetings and shared concerns, describing the withdrawal as the “wisest, most rational, and most responsible” option, especially if continuing the bid would create issues for the fans.

He added that the main goal of the bid was originally to build a new stadium within the city, according to the Spanish newspaper “Marca.”

Mayor de la Torre confirmed that the priority will be given to Malaga CF and its fans, noting an agreement among the three relevant administrations that the club is a fundamental part of the city and must be supported to achieve further development in the future.

He also pointed out that the proposed timelines were not suitable for completing the necessary infrastructure works to host the World Cup, which was an additional factor in the decision to withdraw.

De la Torre noted that his position had changed in recent days, despite previous statements in which he affirmed he would not have to choose between the club and the World Cup.

He concluded by stressing the importance of maintaining a strong relationship with Malaga CF’s fanbase at this stage, noting that while the club may become self-sufficient in the future, it currently needs the support of its supporters.

FIFA officially announced in December 2024 that Spain, Morocco, and Portugal will host the 2030 World Cup finals.
