Bucharest - Saba:
Bucharest Mayor Nicosur Dan won the second round of the Romanian presidential election on Monday, with 100% of the votes counted.
According to Romania's Central Electoral Commission, Dan received 53.60% of the vote, while his rival, Gheorghe Simion, head of the opposition Alliance for the Unification of Romanians (Alliance for the Unification of Romanians), received 46.40%.
Simion conceded defeat and congratulated his opponent on his victory.
The second round of Romania's presidential election took place yesterday, Sunday, after the first round was held on May 4. Simion received 41% of the vote, while Dan received 21%.
Nicosur Dan called for more active cooperation between Romania and the European Union and NATO, as well as a strategic partnership with the United States.
He believes it is necessary to increase the country's defense spending from 2.5% to 3.5% of GDP. The 2025 Romanian presidential election comes amid a political crisis stemming from the annulment of the results of the 2024 first round, which was won by independent candidate Calin Georgescu.
The election was annulled due to allegations of electoral interference via social media. The decision sparked protests across the country and accusations of suppressing the opposition, including from the US administration
