Sana'a - Saba:

The National Association for Yemeni Midwives organized on Saturday an event to mark the International Day of Midwives under the slogan "Crucial role... in every crisis."

The event, held in cooperation with al-Razi University, saw Undersecretary of the Ministry of Social Affairs Yasser Sharaf al-Din, affirm the government's support for impactful associations in societal health and safety.

Sharaf al-Din emphasized the vital role of midwives in maternal and child health and the need for governmental, societal, and associational support for their training and rehabilitation.

Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health Dr. Nagib al-Qubati highlighted the partnership between the public and private sectors in promoting community health through capacity building programs for midwives, emphasizing human-centered care, improved performance, and the importance of breastfeeding and natural birth.

Rector of al-Razi University Dr. Khalil al-Wajih underscored the significance of midwives in providing comprehensive and professional birth services for maternal and newborn health.

Secretary-General of the Motherhood and Childhood Council Akhlaq al-Shami acknowledged the immense contributions of midwives over the past decade amidst aggression and siege, noting they are the frontline of basic women's health services, especially in rural areas, and stressed the need for continued support, training, supplies, and qualification.

Rector of the Yemeni Midwives Association Sabah al-Dhafiri pointed out the crucial role of midwives in saving maternal and newborn lives despite limited resources and challenging conditions, particularly in remote areas.

Al-Shami emphasized that honoring midwives on this day recognizes their emergency response efforts, especially given the reduced support from many humanitarian organizations. She also appreciated initiatives like the "able village" program.

Chairwomen of the Asian Federation of Midwives Refaat Jean, in an online address, praised Yemeni midwives for their dedication despite the challenges, highlighting their supreme humanitarian message and the AFC's ongoing support for their education, training, and empowerment in partnership with international institutions.

The event included a presentation about the association, the distribution of appreciation certificates, and recognition of female figures and midwives working in the field and its pioneers.
