GENEVA August 24. 2024 (Sab) - The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) on Saturday said about 19,000 children have been orphaned in Gaza due to the aggression.
Orphaned children are called "unaccompanied children" spokesman for the organization said, as the horrors of aggression left whether the father in the south, the son with his mother in the north, or vice versa, or his parents martyred during the war.
"Number of unaccompanied children in Gaza is a purely estimated number, because we cannot calculate numbers accurately," Kazem Abu Khalaf added according to the organization's official website.
From our experience as an institution working in war and conflict zones around the world, of the total number, there are one percent of unaccompanied children, whose father or mother may be alive, or orphans.
Abu Khalaf stated that there are 1.9 million displaced people in Gaza, and therefore, the estimated number is 19,000 unaccompanied children. He may be an orphan or his parents were separated from him by the war.
He noted that these numbers are estimates and are measured by experience and conflict areas, and are less than one percent of the total number of displaced people.
It is noteworthy that in cases where there is no reunification, or the child has become an orphan, there is the extended family, whether cousins, uncle, grandmother or grandfather, who take care of the children, provide care until conditions improve, and support is provided to them.
