Hamilton wants F1 back to Africa

ZANDVOORT August 22. 2024 (Saba) - Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has encouraged the idea of Africa hosting a round of the Formula One World Championship, amid talks on Rwanda being included on the calendar.

According to AFP on Thursday, the Mercedes driver asked on the sidelines of the Netherlands Grand Prix this weekend: "Why don't we (Formula One) be on that continent."

Italian Formula One chief executive Stefano Domenicali has scheduled a meeting next month with Rwandan representatives who have put forward a "serious" proposal.

Africa has not hosted a round of the tournament since the 1993 South African Grand Prix, but Domenikali told Motorsport that tournament officials needed to weigh several factors.

"We want to go to Africa, but we need the right investment, the right strategic plan.
