DAMASCUS August 13. 2024 (Saba) - An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale struck east of Hama city last night, followed by weaker aftershocks.
The Syrian National Earthquake Center said in a statement on Tuesday, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), that seismic monitoring stations recorded 13 tremors east of Hama city, the highest of which was 5.3 on the Richter scale at 11:55 p.m. Monday, explaining that the main tremor occurred as a result of the accumulation of energy during the previous period of time within the secondary faults associated with the Dead Sea fault, while the tremors following the main tremor are weaker aftershocks.
On May 18 of last year, the National Earthquake Center indicated a noticeable change in seismicity within a range extending from the south of the city of Tartous in the sea to Talkalakh in Homs to Hama and all the way to Salamiyah, and that the probability of tremors occurring between 3 and 5 degrees on the Richter scale is estimated at 30 percent.
