Sana'a's al-Nahrain Mosque reopens after reconstruction

SANA'A August 06. 2024 (Saba) — Al-Nahrain Mosque in the old city of Sana'a was officially reopened on Tuesday following a comprehensive reconstruction and expansion project led by al-Kabous Charitable Foundation.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by key figures including Mohammed Ali al-Houthi, member of the Supreme Political Council; Dr. Abdulaziz bin Habtoor, Prime Minister of the Caretaker Government; and Sheikh Shams al-Din Sharaf al-Din, the Mufti of Yemen.

The newly renovated mosque, which boasts traditional Yemeni architectural style, represents a significant religious and historical landmark.

The renovation, funded at a cost of 1.5 billion Y.R, includes a central dome, four smaller domes, and upgraded facilities. The mosque is now capable of accommodating 2,000 worshipers.

During the ceremony, al-Houthi emphasized the mosque's role as a symbol of truth and resilience, drawing parallels with the destruction of mosques in Gaza and Yemen.

He called for the mosque to be a center for upholding moral values and a refuge for scholarly pursuit.

Dr. Bin Habtoor highlighted the mosque's importance as a spiritual asset and praised the collaboration in its restoration. Sheikh Sharaf al-Din provided historical context, noting the mosque's role in Quranic education and Islamic scholarship.

The event underscored the community's commitment to preserving cultural heritage and enhancing religious and educational facilities. The project also reflects broader efforts to support and revive Yemen's religious landmarks amidst ongoing challenges.

Al-Kabous announced that the upcoming second phase of the mosque project will involve constructing the mosque’s minaret, setting up commercial shops to serve as endowments, and covering part of the mosque's expenses.

He extended his gratitude to the General Authority for Endowments and the Grand Mufti of Yemen for their support in the reconstruction efforts, as well as to all contributors who played a role in this endeavor.
