DHAMAR July 28. 2024 (Saba) - A training course on the safe handling and use of pesticides and integrated management of plant pest control began on Sunday at the Agriculture and Irrigation Office in Dhamar province.

The four-day course, funded by the Executive Unit for the Management of Project Financing and Agricultural Initiatives in the province, aims to provide 20 farmers from Ans district with information and skills on the safe use of agricultural pesticides and integrated management of pest control.

Director of the Agriculture and Irrigation Office Adel Omar stressed the importance of providing farmers with knowledge and skills related to the harms of random pesticide use, the effects of pesticides on humans, living organisms, and the environment, plant diseases, general symptoms of plant diseases, and integrated pest management.

Omar pointed out that the participants in the course will receive knowledge and skills about the different types of pesticides, methods of applying all precautions when using pesticides before, during, and after spraying, first aid methods, and necessary procedures in the event of acute pesticide poisoning.

He explained that the participants will learn about some terms and penalties for violating the law regulating the circulation of pesticides, the law on seeds and agricultural fertilizers, information about fertilization, types of fertilizers, and fertilizer needs during the stages of plant growth. Additionally, they will develop an agreed mechanism to protect honey bees from pesticide poisoning.

Omar highlighted that this course is part of a training program aimed at qualifying 640 individuals, including farmers, agricultural managers, heads of control departments in the directorates, prevention specialists in agricultural cooperatives, and members of security points.

The Director of the Agriculture Office appreciated the support, coordination, and care from the Supreme Agricultural and Fisheries Committee, the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, and the local authority, which has been reflected in the success of various agricultural projects and has contributed effectively to enhancing the performance of the agricultural sector.

He reviewed the efforts made by the office in controlling the circulation of pesticides through implementing periodic control and inspection campaigns and preparing an integrated guide on this aspect. He stressed the importance of concerted efforts to confront the risks of random pesticide use and combat the phenomenon of smuggling prohibited pesticides that are dangerous to humans, plants, and the environment.
