RAMALLAH July 18. 2024 (Sheba) - The Palestinian Football Association has condemned the recent agreement between CONMEBOL (South American Football Confederation) and the Israeli/ Occupation Football Federation, which permits the Israeli national team to participate in the Copa America Championship.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Palestinian Federation criticized the decision, highlighting the ongoing genocide in Gaza, which renders the agreement morally unacceptable and internationally indefensible.
The statement urged FIFA and the international community to oppose the violations against Palestinian athletes, who face deliberate targeting while Israeli sports receive international recognition.
The agreement, signed in mid-April in Asuncion, Paraguay, allows for the future participation of the Israeli national team in the tournament, similar to the inclusion of North and Latin American teams.
The Palestinian Association reaffirmed its commitment to the principles and laws of FIFA and the Olympic Charter, calling for justice and solidarity with Palestinian athletes.
The Association is awaiting FIFA's decision on July 20, 2024, regarding holding Israel accountable for its actions against Palestinian athletes, expressing confidence that justice will prevail.
The Copa America Championship, held every four years, features all ten CONMEBOL teams, with Argentina winning the last edition.
According to the Palestinian Sports Media Federation, the ongoing conflict in Gaza has resulted in the deaths of over 300 athletes, most of them children.
