BRAZZAVILLE June 13. 2024 (Saba) - At least 86 people were killed when a migrant boat carrying more than 270 passengers capsized on a river near the capital, Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Felix Tshisekedi, said in a statement on Thursday: "The locally-made boat capsized late last Monday in Mai Ndombe Province along the Kwa River."

For his part, Ren Maker, the water commissioner in the Moshi region where the accident occurred, said: The boat "was carrying 271 passengers to the capital, Kinshasa, when its engine broke down."

Maker added: "86 passengers died while 185 others managed to swim to shore, which is about 70 kilometers from the nearest city, Moshi." He pointed out that "the boat hit the edge of the river bank and was destroyed."
