THE HAGUE May 29. 2024 (Saba) - The International Court of Justice announced on Wednesday that it has received a request from Mexico to join the genocide case filed by South Africa against the Zionist enemy against the background of the aggression in the Gaza Strip.
Mexico has asked to join South Africa's lawsuit against the enemy over violations of the 1948 United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.
Mexico's request for intervention was based on Article 63 of the Court's Statute, which "gives other States the right to intervene for the purpose of making a statement on the interpretation of the Convention."
Mexico indicated its wish "to present its view on the interpretation of the relevant provisions of the Convention on the issue".
Mexico's announcement comes at a critical and dangerous time, as our Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, especially in Rafah, are suffering from a catastrophic humanitarian situation, in light of the continued commission of the crime of genocide and its reaching unprecedented levels of suffering, highlighting the urgent need for justice, the application of the rule of law, and urgent intervention to stop the crimes of occupation and provide protection for our people.
For its part, the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the announcement by the government of the United Mexican States to intervene under Article 63 of the Rules of the International Court of Justice in the case related to the application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip, submitted by South Africa against Israel.
Mexico's announcement to intervene in the lawsuit reflects its unwavering commitment to justice and the rule of international law, and the deep solidarity and historical friendship between the two countries, the ministry said in a statement.
It reiterated her deep thanks and appreciation to the Republic of Nicaragua, the Republic of Colombia and the State of Libya for their announcements to join this important lawsuit.
The Ministry called on all States to join and announce their active participation in the proceedings before the International Court of Justice to push for an end to the genocide against the Palestinian people and an end to the era of impunity for Israel, the occupying Power.
