WHO says situation remains critical in northern Afghanistan after floods
[Thu, 16 May 2024 11:22:04 +0300]

GENEVA May 16. 2024 (Saba) - The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the situation "remains critical" in the northern provinces of Afghanistan that were hit by floods last weekend, the WHO said in a report.

The WHO added "The situation remains critical. "Thousands of people remain displaced and in urgent need of food, shelter and care.

At least 300 people have been killed by flash floods, particularly in Baghlan province, while relief efforts have been hampered today as many roads have been destroyed and rivers have overflowed.

Various UN agencies and Taliban officials have warned that the death toll is likely to rise, and many are still missing.

The WHO explained that internet glitches still hinder the real situation in some of the most isolated villages.

It said "Humanitarian organizations continue to face significant access issues due to widespread damage to infrastructure, including roads and bridges."

Thousands of homes have been destroyed and damaged, many livestock have been swept away, and large areas of arable land have been flooded.

Meteorologists are predicting more rain for Baghlan and other northern provinces in the coming days.
