NEW YORK April 23. 2024 (Saba) - An independent review of the performance of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has confirmed that the role of the United Nations organization “remains essential in providing humanitarian aid” to the Palestinians and that the Zionist entity (Israel) did not provide “evidence” to support its claims that a large number of its crew members are connected “Terrorist organizations.”
The review, conducted by a committee headed by former French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna, indicated that the agency "has no alternative in terms of the humanitarian and economic development of the Palestinians."
Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres assigned the committee to conduct an assessment of the “neutrality” of this UN agency.
In its fifty-page report, the committee stressed that the role of “UNRWA remains essential in providing life-saving humanitarian aid and basic social services, including health and education, to Palestinian refugees in Gaza, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and the West Bank.”
The committee’s report stated that “UNRWA has no substitute for it in terms of human and economic development for the Palestinians. In addition, many consider UNRWA a humanitarian lifeline.”
The independent commission concluded in its report that the problems referred to “relate to cases in which employees publicly expressed their political opinions, to textbooks with problematic content originating from the host country and used in some UNRWA schools, and to politicized trade unionists making threats against UNRWA management and obstructing” humanitarian operations.
In its report, which was prepared based on nine-week interviews and missions in the occupied Palestinian territories and Jordan, the committee said that “based on a list dating back to March 2024 that includes the identity numbers of Palestinians, Israel has publicly confirmed that a large number of UNRWA employees are members of terrorist organizations. But (Israel) (You did not provide any evidence for that.)
Commenting on this report, Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, said, “The Secretary-General accepted the recommendations contained in Ms. Colonna’s report,” referring to an “action plan” that will be implemented in this regard.
