SANA'A February 06. 2024 (Saba) - The Internet Society - Yemen Chapter commented on what was published News and of threats to telecommunications submarine cables passing through Bab Al-Mandab have been circulated by some media sources and several social media accounts and pages associated with Israel.
To clarify these allegations, we at the Internet Society reached out to the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology in Sana'a to verify the claims made in these reports.
The source from the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology in Sana'a denied the published reports concerning this matter and stated in an interview with the Internet Society – Yemen Chapter: “The Republic of Yemen's strategy, as represented by the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology, focuses on the development and enhancement of telecommunication and internet services.
This includes expanding service coverage through national and licensed entities, particularly the Yemen International Telecommunications Company ‘TeleYemen’. Furthermore, the ministry is dedicated to continuously upgrading the infrastructure and the international Internet gateway.
This effort aims to embrace new technologies for telecommunication services while addressing all obstacles and challenges.
The source stressed that all recent claims regarding threats to submarine cables passing through Bab Al-Mandab are fabricated lies. Their purpose is to divert attention from the crimes committed by Israel in the Gaza Strip.
The source emphasized that the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology in Sana'a operates with a national and strategic vision.
It is actively developing regional and international partnerships, contributing to both current and future collaborations.
These efforts focus on enhancing shared interests with its partners, including submarine cable projects and regional data centers, in ways that safeguard Yemen’s rights and sovereignty while advancing its interests.
At the Internet Society - Yemen Chapter, we have been urging the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology to enhance the quality of Internet services in Yemen, ensure their continuity, and provide diverse sources of connectivity to guarantee the stability and continuity of Internet services.
We believe that the Ministry must spare no effort in achieving this diversity.
At the Internet Society – Yemen Chapter, we confirm that we have observed no actions or intentions related to these allegations.
Furthermore, we express our deep concern over any actions by external parties targeting submarine cables.
Therefore, the Internet Society – Yemen Chapter demands that the telecommunications sector be kept away from any conflicts and urges against adopting or spreading such allegations and fake news, which undermine human rights as defined by the charters of the United Nations.
