GENEVA October 05.2023 (Saba) - The World Health Organization (WHO) announced that the death toll from typhoon Daniel, which ravaged cities and eastern Libya, last month reached 4,333 people, including 101 health workers.
The head of the WHO country office's health emergency team in Libya, Hala Khudari, told her last night's online briefing on health emergencies in the eastern Mediterranean region, which the organization broadcast via its official Facebook page.
Khudari said: "What Libya experienced as a result of the cyclone that hit its eastern cities is very catastrophic. I was there in Derna and witnessed the destruction myself ".
She added: "The official reported hurricane deaths amounted to 4,333."
She confirmed: "The recovery of the bodies is still ongoing, with a body recovered on Tuesday night 250 km from the shores of the city of Derna."
"There are also 8,500 reported missing persons in the affected areas." 101 health workers were killed, including 25 specialist doctors. She continued.
She considered this to be a significant loss for Libya's health sector over the future.
"There have been significant efforts by the Libyan health system in the affected areas to respond to the wounded and to transport the dead bodies." She said.
