NIAMEY September 26. 2023 (Saba) – Military Council in Niger confirmed its desire to establish a negotiating framework for the withdrawal of French forces from the country, following France’s announcement of withdrawing its ambassador and forces from Niger.
Council stressed in a statement on Tuesday that the timetable for the withdrawal of French forces, consisting of 1,500 soldiers in Niger, must “take place within a negotiated framework and joint agreement for better effectiveness.”
He noted that he expects this announcement to be followed by official measures issued by the relevant French authorities.
statement by the military junta in Niger came after French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France would withdraw its ambassador, Sylvain Eté, from Niger, and then the French soldiers, two months after the protests that Niger witnessed last July and toppled President Mohamed Bazoum.
In recent weeks, Niamey witnessed demonstrations against the French presence in which thousands of people participated.
