PYONGYANG Aug. 21. 2023 (Saba) - The North Korean Central News Agency revealed that leader Kim Jong Un supervised Monday the test of a cruise missile on board a warship.
The agency said North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un visited the Flutela naval base in charge of defending the eastern coast and followed the sailors on a patrol ship as they were testing the firing of strategic cruise missiles.
"During the training, which aimed to reaffirm the function of the naval ship in battle and the advantage of the missile system and to make the sailors more skilled in carrying out the attack mission in actual warfare, the ship hit the target quickly and without even any error," the agency added.
Pictures released by state media showed a missile being fired from Patrol Ship No. 661, with Kim observing the scene on a separate ship.
Kim vowed to strengthen the North's navy into a "strong and comprehensive service group" with improved combat effectiveness and modern means of surface and underwater attack and defense.
North Korea will "promote the modernization of the navy's weapons and equipment, including building powerful warships and developing underwater weapon systems on ships," according to the North Korean leader.
In the same context, South Korea and the United States started the annual "Ulchi Freedom Shield" exercise Monday, which includes a set of standby exercises, such as computer simulation-based command base training, simultaneous field training, and civil defense exercises that will last until August 31.
