MIAMI Aug. 20. 2023 (Saba) - Floods and landslides caused by the recent torrential rains in the Republic of Niger have claimed the lives of 27 people and affected more than 70,000 people since last July.

The Nigerien Ministry of Humanitarian Action stated that the regions of Maradi, Zinder and Tahoua were severely damaged, 6,530 houses were collapsed.

The rainy season, between June and September, is often known to cause deadly floods in the Republic of Niger, which is located in West Africa and has desert lands that include a dry northern regions.

Despite this, the capital, Niamey, with a population of one million, has escaped deadly floods so far, although it often suffers from the aftermath of floods.

Last year, the rainy season killed 195 people and affected the lives of 400,000 people.

The Meteorological Service of the Republic of Niger attributes the increase in seasonal rainfall to the climatic changes that have been affecting the country for several years.
