TOKYO July 10. 2023 (Saba) - Heavy rains in southwestern Japan caused floods and landslides, killing two people and leaving at least six others missing.
According to Russia Today, the Japan Meteorological Agency on Monday issued an emergency warning of heavy rain for Fukuoka and Oita Prefectures on the southern main island of Kyushu, urging residents in river and hilly areas to exercise extreme caution.
It also urged more than 1.7 million residents of vulnerable areas to take shelter.
The rains that fell in the Kyushu and Chugoku regions since the beginning of the week caused flooding along a number of rivers, in addition to landslides, blocking roads, disrupting trains, and cutting off water supplies in some areas.
Two people have died and at least six others are missing, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency and county officials.
A man was found dead in a car that fell into a river in Yamaguchi Prefecture.
In the town of Suida, Fukuoka Prefecture, two people were buried under a landslide, while one was rescued while still alive, but the other was found without signs of life and later declared dead, according to prefecture officials.
The agency said rescue workers in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, are searching for three people whose homes were hit by a landslide.
