UNHCR: More than million have been internally displaced in Somalia in four months

UNHCR: More than million have been internally displaced in Somalia in four months
[25/May/2023]

MOGADISHU May 25. 2023 (Saba) - More than a million people in Somalia have had to leave their homes within four months due to severe drought, recurrent conflict and floods, said the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the Norwegian Refugee Council.

In a statement, the UNHCR, country director of the Norwegian Refugee Council in Somalia Mohamed Abdi considered these figures "alarming", expecting the worst in the coming months.

Many of those forced to flee are arriving in crowded urban areas and sites already hosting internally displaced persons, placing enormous pressure on already stretched resources and exposing vulnerable people to increased protection risks.

UNHCR pointed out that there are now more than 3.8 million displaced people in Somalia, exacerbating the already dire humanitarian situation, as some 6.7 million people struggle to meet their food needs, while more than half a million Somali children suffer from acute malnutrition.

It noted that aid agencies have so far received only 22% of the resources required to provide much-needed assistance this year.
