Over 12 billion dollars losses of fish sector as a result of aggression & blockade
[09/January/2023]

HODEIDA January 09. 2023 (Saba) - The fish sector in the Red Sea has incurred material losses amounting to 12,649,872,000 dollars since the start of the aggression and blockade on Yemen.

A report of the General Authority for Fisheries revealed these losses, during a press conference organized by the Authority today in cooperation with the Tihama Coast Fish Cooperative Association, to review the violations that Yemeni fishermen are subjected to by the aggression countries and their mercenaries in the Red Sea since eight years of aggression.

The report indicated that the total losses incurred by the fisheries sector in infrastructure as a result of the systematic bombing and destruction were nine million and 451 thousand and 163 dollars, and in boats and fishing equipment six million and 270 thousand and 117 dollars.

It stated that the continuation of the aggression, the unjust blockade and the restrictions imposed on the country eight years ago caused losses to stop fish production amounting to three billion and 610 million and 64 thousand and 744 dollars, while the losses of stopping investment projects amounted to one billion and 994 million and 852 thousand and 310 dollars.

The losses of fish stocks as a result of illegal fishing by foreign fishing vessels amounted to three billion and 675 million dollars, while the losses of commercial and service activities and services related to the fish sector amounted to 27 million and 788 thousand and 898 dollars, and five million and 552 thousand- and 48-dollars total losses related to revenues from exports.

According to the report, which was reviewed by the Deputy Chairman of the Fisheries Authority, Muhammad Al-Omeisy, the losses of the environmental impact assessment exceeded two billion and 940 million dollars, and the revenues and fees due to the state from traditional fishing amounted to 144 million and 402 thousand and 590 dollars.
It pointed out that the total losses of fish export companies during the years of aggression amounted to 226 million and 501 thousand dollars, indicating that the number of areas targeted by the aggression warplanes was 53.

It also indicated that the raids and shells on these areas claimed 273 martyrs with horrific crimes and 214 injured, and the destruction of 295 fishing boats, including 225 in Hodeida and 70 in Medi, Hajjah province, as well as the destruction of 150 means of transporting fish.

In the report, Al-Omeisy dealt with the violations that affected fishermen while they were practicing the fishing profession on the coasts of the Red Sea, indicating that 2,54 fishermen were kidnapped and 173 boats were piracy during the kidnapping and torture of fishermen by the aggression and its mercenaries.

The deputy head of the General Authority for Fisheries, Muhammad al-Omeisy, spoke about the most prominent violations against fishermen by the aggression and mercenaries, the latest of which was the kidnapping of three fishermen, including a child two days ago, and their detention for 11 days under torture, and the efforts made by the authority to alleviate their suffering.

It considered the multiple shells crimes, violations, kidnappings, confiscation of their boats, burglary of their property, and deprivation of the right to live and earn a full livelihood to the fishermen as war crimes and a disgrace to the perpetrators.

The deputy governor denounced the continued shameful position of the United Nations and international human rights organizations, which shirked their humanitarian responsibilities towards the crimes and violations suffered by fishermen in the Red Sea, resulting in hundreds of victims and the deprivation of thousands of workers in this profession from their sources of livelihood.

He called on the international community, led by the United Nations and relevant organizations, to provide protection for fishermen who are subjected to daily piracy, kidnapping and detention by the aggression mercenaries, and to take responsible positions towards the conditions of fishermen.

He praised the role and efforts of the General Authority for Fisheries and the Fishermen's Support Committee, which was formed to follow up on fishermen's issues and assist them in the available aspects, stressing the importance of concerted efforts by organizations to provide support to them and mitigate the damages that affected them at various levels.
