Yemen denies CPJ report on press freedom

SANA'A, Oct. 01 (Saba) – Allegations and information of a report on press freedom in Yemen, which was recently published by the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists, were incorrect and distorted, an official source in the Yemeni government said on Friday.

"This report clearly has been adopted on incorrect and distorted information prepared for the committee by a person named Mohamed Abdel Dayem who has visited Yemen and met with several elements of the opposition", the source said in a statement to Saba.

Describing the opposition elements as malevolent on Yemen and its unity, the source said that they provided Abdul-Daam with false and misleading information.

The source accused Abdul-Daam of abusing Yemen and distorting the reality of its press freedoms, which Yemen witnesses within the framework of an democratic pluralist.

"Today in Yemen there are more than 160 press publications and dozens of media websites and blogs which work within the framework of democracy and freedom of opinion and expression and the practice of criticism, which sometimes exceed all limits", the source highlighted.
