The death toll from clashes between local armed groups and tribal gunmen in Sweida, southern Syria, rose on Tuesday to around 100, while the number of injured exceeded 200, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
News reports indicated that the clashes are concentrated around the village of Kanaker and in the towns of Thaala and Al-Mazraa, involving armed groups and forces composed of Bedouin tribes and other formations.
Residents of Sweida had expressed, in a statement issued earlier on Monday, their sorrow over what they described as manifestations of violence and uncontrolled weapons from all parties, calling for a collective moral stance, the prioritization of wisdom over emotion, and recourse to the law.
They called for “listening to the voice of reason, preserving the city’s social fabric and security, and rejecting the transformation of its neighborhoods into battlegrounds,” stressing that “the blood of our sons is more precious than any conflict.”
