A training workshop on first aid and epidemic disease control began today for staff at detention centers in the Capital Security Directorate. Under the slogan "Behind Bars, There's a Human Being," the workshop is organized by the Department of Preventive and Therapeutic Medicine at the Ministry of Interior and the Field Epidemiology Training Program at the Ministry of Health and Environment.
The three-week workshop aims to provide 32 participants from detention centers with knowledge of the most common diseases they may encounter among detainees in police stations or correctional facilities. It also aims to provide them with information on how to detect the symptoms of these diseases early, particularly epidemic ones, and inform surveillance coordinators of any suspected cases.
At the opening ceremony, Minister of Health and Environment Dr. Ali Shaiban highlighted the importance of the course, which comes within the framework of integration between the Ministries of Health and Interior.
He highlighted the importance of understanding how to deal with patients in detention centers, emphasizing that not all patients need to be isolated.
Dr. Shaiban stated that all epidemics can be eliminated through the use of simple measures related to cleanliness and purity, noting the importance of promoting a culture of cleanliness of body, place, and clothing in detention centers to prevent many diseases and epidemics.
He praised the role of the Ministry of Interior in implementing such activities and courses aimed at improving the health status within detention and correctional centers.
For his part, Major General Mohammed Marsh, Assistant Undersecretary for the Resources Sector at the Ministry of Interior, indicated that the workshop comes within the framework of cooperation and coordination between the Ministries of Interior and Health to train personnel within detention centers.
He pointed out that the workshop's slogan emphasizes the importance of caring for people, whether free or in prison, and improving their environment to prevent many diseases and epidemics. He expressed hope that the workshop participants would benefit from the workshop and reflect its knowledge on the ground.
For his part, Dr. Mohammed Al-Mansour, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health and Environment for the Healthcare Sector, indicated that the workshop is the result of joint efforts and coordination between the Ministries of Health and Interior to train their personnel in health-related fields.
He emphasized the importance of the workshop in introducing trainees to public health principles and disease transmission methods in correctional facilities and detention centers, in addition to first aid. He reviewed many of the activities implemented in coordination with the Ministry of Interior, particularly those related to visiting correctional facilities, providing medicines, and conducting medical surveys.
Dr. Abdul Hakim Al-Kahlani, Director of the Field Epidemiology Training Program, reviewed the objectives and program of the training workshop, explaining that participants will be introduced to diseases such as cholera, tuberculosis, mental and chest diseases, diphtheria, liver disease, and non-communicable diseases, among others.
He noted that participants will be trained in first aid and then undergo field visits to several health programs at the Ministry of Health and several hospitals in the Capital Secretariat.
The opening ceremony was attended by Brigadier General Ahmed Al-Hashemi, Deputy Director of Security of the Capital Secretariat, Dr. Ihab Al-Saqqaf, Director of the General Department of Disease Control and Surveillance at the Ministry of Health, Colonel Dr. Akram Al-Madani, Director of Preventive Medicine at the Ministry of Interior, Hamadi Dhafer, Head of the Preventive Medicine Division at the Military Medical Services, and a number of officials from the Ministries of Health and Interior.
