Los Angeles - Saba:
The Los Angeles Fire Department announced on Thursday that at least 15 people have been trapped beneath the rubble of a collapsed tunnel in the city, noting that no injuries have been reported so far.
Mayor Karen Bass stated in a post on social media, as reported by Reuters, that over 100 members of the Los Angeles Fire Department have been assigned to respond to the incident, which occurred at 1701 North Figueroa Street, the only known entrance to the tunnel.
According to the fire department, the workers may be trapped up to six miles from the tunnel’s only entry point. Specially trained and equipped urban search and rescue teams have been deployed to the site to handle the complex operation.
The Los Angeles Fire Department has four specialized urban search and rescue teams, all of which have been activated.
FOX 11 Los Angeles reported that some workers have been rescued from the tunnel and were able to walk out on their own. Reports indicated that they were extracted using a crane.
The collapse occurred at a $630.5 million wastewater tunnel project in Los Angeles.
According to the main contractor, Flatiron Dragados, the tunnel is 7 miles long, approximately 18 feet in diameter, and lies 450 feet below ground level.
