New York – Saba:
Mexico and Costa Rica officially secured their spots in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, representing Group A, after defeating Suriname and the Dominican Republic respectively in Thursday’s second-round matches.
At AT&T Stadium in Texas, Mexico claimed a 2-0 victory over Suriname, with both goals scored by César Montes, the Lokomotiv Moscow defender, in the 57th and 63rd minutes.
This marked Mexico’s second consecutive win, following a 3-2 triumph over the Dominican Republic in the opening round. El Tri now lead the group with a perfect 6 points, ahead of Costa Rica on goal difference.
Earlier in the day, Costa Rica staged a comeback win over the Dominican Republic, triumphing 2-1 after falling behind. Joan Orbaez Gomez opened the scoring for the Dominicans in the 16th minute, but Manfred Ugalde equalized from the spot in the 44th, and Josimar Alcócer sealed the win in the 85th minute.
Costa Rica also reached 6 points from two wins, securing second place in the group. Meanwhile, Suriname and the Dominican Republic remain pointless, sharing last place and officially exiting the tournament.
The final group-stage clash between Mexico and Costa Rica will now determine the group winner, which will influence their quarterfinal opponents.
The 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup is taking place across the United States and Canada from June 14 to July 6, featuring 16 teams from the region, along with Saudi Arabia participating as a guest nation.
