Al-Hodeidah – Saba

The Yemeni Sugar Refining Company, in cooperation with the local branch of the Environmental Protection Authority in Al-Hodeidah, celebrated World Environment Day today, alongside the launch of the Carbon Neutrality and Biodiversity Program.

During the event, Abdulqader Yaghnam, Director of the Environmental Protection Authority’s branch, praised the level of environmental partnership with the company, highlighting its notable environmental progress over the past two years and sustainable achievements this year.

He stressed the authority’s efforts to instill environmental awareness within industrial and community sectors, and to support institutional initiatives that prioritize environmental responsibility.

Yaghnam described the company as a leading model in integrating industrial production with environmental responsibility, reflecting a positive shift toward sustainable development in the private sector.

For his part, the company’s Deputy Director, Mohammed Al-Amari, noted that achieving carbon neutrality is a strategic goal, through adopting top environmental standards and occupational health and safety practices.

Younes Al-Khatib, Director of Environmental Compliance, confirmed that the group prioritizes environmental issues by implementing projects in renewable energy, afforestation, and waste recycling, in line with its vision for sustainability and social responsibility.

Ammar Qarar, Director of Systems and Quality, explained that launching the Carbon Neutrality and Biodiversity Program aligns with the company’s commitment to modern environmental management standards.

He noted that the company applies an Energy Management System, becoming the first Yemeni facility to adopt this global standard to reduce consumption and recycle industrial and food waste into organic fertilizer for agriculture.

The event, attended by officials from both the company and the Environmental Protection Authority, featured a documentary report highlighting key environmental activities, particularly waste recycling, organic fertilizer production, and biodiversity preservation through community awareness programs.

The event concluded with a field visit to the company’s organic fertilizer plant, during which participants carried out a tree-planting campaign, planting 300 damas tree seedlings as part of the Green Belt Program, aimed at improving vegetation cover around the facility.
