TOKYO August 31. 2024 (Saba) - Japan continues to experience significant transportation disruptions as Typhoon Shanshan, now downgraded to a tropical storm, moves eastward after hitting Kyushu Island.
The Japanese Fire and Disaster Management Agency reported that Shanshan, one of the strongest typhoons to affect Japan in recent years, initially struck Kyushu with wind speeds of up to 252 km/h but has now weakened to around 90 km/h. The typhoon has resulted in six fatalities and over 120 injuries.
On Saturday, Japan Airlines and ANA canceled approximately 60 flights, impacting around 7,200 passengers. Additionally, Shinkansen high-speed trains have been suspended in Nagoya due to the severe weather conditions.
Authorities have issued warnings about potential landslides, flooding, and river overflows.
In the Gifu region, evacuation orders have been given to about 2,000 residents near a swollen river, while heavy rains are affecting parts of northern Hokkaido.
Power outages continue to affect more than 32,000 homes in the southern Kagoshima region.
The disruption follows Typhoon Ampil, which caused extensive train delays earlier in August but resulted in less damage.
Residents are urged to remain cautious as the tropical storm continues to impact various regions of Japan.
