BEIRUT July 28. 2024 (Saba) - The United Nations missions and the UNIFIL peacekeeping forces in Lebanon warned on Sunday of a full-scale war and a wider conflict between the Zionist enemy and the Lebanese Hezbollah that could plunge the region into a catastrophe.
According to Sama News Agency, the warnings came against the backdrop of the killing of 12 people and the injury of 30 others in the town of Majdal Shams in the occupied Syrian Golan, as a result of a missile attack, which the enemy army claimed originated in southern Lebanon, while Druze sources said that the incident occurred as a result of Zionist interceptor missiles.
In a joint statement by the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, and UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander, Major General Aroldo Lazaro, the two parties condemned “the killing of civilians, including young children and teenagers, in Majdal Shams,” and stressed the need to “protect civilians at all times.”
The statement urged “the parties to exercise maximum restraint and put an end to the intense and ongoing exchange of fire, which risks igniting a wider conflict that would plunge the entire region into an unimaginable catastrophe.”
The statement said that “UNIFIL and the Office of the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon are in contact with both Lebanon and Israel.”
