WASHINGTON July 20. 2024 (Saba) - A number of US national security officials on Friday called on current US President Joe Biden to step down from running in the presidential elections.
The HuffPost news website said that foreign policy experts, who supported President Joe Biden, are publicly circulating a petition telling former national security officials under Biden leadership that he should step down as the Democratic Party's presidential nominee for the good of the country.
“With deep appreciation for your many decades of inspiring leadership, we strongly believe that the continuing concerns surrounding your continued candidacy, and the growing possibility of Donald Trump winning the Electoral College, place your national security accomplishments — and our country and your legacy — at an unacceptable level of risk,” the document said.
A source familiar with the letter said that the petition was circulated yesterday morning, and by that evening had attracted dozens of signatures, including those of former senior national security officials.
The source added that the petition will be sent to the White House on Friday afternoon.
This comes at a time when some senior Democratic leaders are trying to persuade the president to abandon his candidacy for a second term, in light of unfavorable opinion polls regarding his chances of winning against his Republican opponent, former President Donald Trump.
