WASHINGTON July 19. 2024 (Saba) - US President Joe Biden is close to making a decision to withdraw from running for the presidential elections and open the door to competition to succeed him, according to leaks that confirmed that the Democratic Party is currently discussing options for the next stage.
Initial discussions within the Democratic Party suggest that President Joe Biden will call for open competition at the next party conference.
Informed sources explained that discussions by some Democrats are pushing three candidates in addition to Vice President Camilla Harris, including California Governor Gavin Newsom.
The New York Times quoted a person close to Biden as saying today that the US President, although he has not yet taken a decision to withdraw from the presidential race, it would not be surprising if he soon announced his support for Harris as his alternative candidate.
For its part, the Washington Post reported, citing three Democratic Party officials, that former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi informed some Democrats in the House that she believed President Joe Biden could soon be persuaded to withdraw from the presidential race.
The newspaper said that Pelosi believes that Biden is about to make a decision to abandon his bid for re-election as president of the country
The Washington Post confirmed that former US President Barack Obama told those close to him that Biden must reconsider his candidacy for a second presidential term, and it quoted people familiar with Obama’s position that he believes that Biden’s chances of winning have diminished and that he must “seriously reconsider the possibility of continuing nominate him.”
In turn, Reuters quoted sources it described as informed that Biden is seriously considering calls asking him to withdraw from the candidacy, and confirmed that officials in the Democratic Party believe that his exit from the competition is a matter of time.
The president defied those calls, saying that he had won millions of votes in the primary elections over the past months and that he was the choice of Democratic voters, but he did not rule out withdrawing if he faced a health emergency.
Biden is recovering from Covid-19 at his beach house in Delaware. He did not have any public events on Thursday, after concluding a trip to the politically swing state of Nevada on Wednesday.
