Health Minister:  the health sector has entered a critical stage due to the blockade and the detention of oil ships
[02/August/2020]

SANAA, Aug. 2 (Saba) - Minister of Public Health and Population Dr. Taha Al-Mutawakkil has emphasized that the health sector has entered a critical stage due to the continuing blockade and the prevention of entry of oil derivatives and medicines that negatively affect health services and endanger patients' lives.

Dr. al-Mutawakkil explained, at a press conference held in Sanaa over the repercussions of the embargo on Yemen, the prevention of the entry of oil derivatives and the withdrawal of organizations, that the continued intransigence of the aggression coalition led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates under the American mask in the detention of oil derivatives ships has created a major crisis in Yemen at all levels and at the forefront of the health sector.

He indicated that in light of the intransigence of the aggressive countries and their deliberate denial of the entry of oil ships, medicines, and medical supplies, the health sector faces difficult and catastrophic conditions.

Dr. al-Mutawakkil pointed out that working in hospitals if the entry of oil derivatives continues to be prevented, will be limited to emergencies, operations and part of the care units, which negatively affects the nurseries of children, stressing that the care units in public and private hospitals are threatened to stop.

The Minister of Health said that 4,000 patients with kidney failure are at risk of death while oxygen factories are operating under the Corona pandemic by 50 percent, noting that the transport of patients via ambulance has affected, which means that they are pre-sentenced to death in their homes or places of injury and illness due to the consequences of the blockade imposed on Yemen.

We are surprised by the global silence as we enter the third month of the aggression coalition preventing the entry of oil ships, calling the countries of the world to put pressure on the aggression coalition to launch oil ships, especially for the health sector, the health minister said.

He pointed out that the crisis of oil derivatives increases the burden of the health sector, especially in light of the equipment and medical supplies worn out, indicating that the countries of aggression prevent the import of important and necessary medical equipment and supplies.

The minister emphasized that the medical devices and supplies that the Aggression prevents entry are important such as the "linear accelerator that saves the lives of patients of oncology and cancer, which means that 40,000 are at risk of death.

He said that the aggression prevented the entry of medical supplies related to chronic diseases, especially those that need to be cooled to certain degrees, such as insulin for diabetics, as well as preventing the entry of medical supplies for tumors, which compounded the suffering of patients.

The Minister pointed out that the closure of Sana'a International Airport increased the burden of the health sector and created a major humanitarian crisis, as hundreds of patients need to travel abroad, indicating that the air bridge agreed with the World Health Organization during which only 30 patients were transferred who suffered neglect abroad.

"There are about 300,000 patients in need of treatment abroad, and we have 30,000 patients who have been diagnosed in cooperation with the World Health Organization and only 30 patients have been discharged abroad, which is considered a crime because of the complicity of the organizations in this regard," he said.

"With the closure of Sanaa airport, the tightening of the blockade and the denial of access to oil derivatives, we have been officially informed by many organizations of their withdrawal, the failure to provide their health services, especially those working in health centers and hospitals, as well as maternity and childhood hospitals, and the lack of medicines for chronic disease patients," he said, stressing that this withdrawal, which coincides with the embargo and the denial of the entry of oil derivatives in the light of the Corona pandemic comes in the light of the US pressure on Yemen.

The Minister of Health held the international community and the Aggression responsible for the health consequences of the withdrawal of organizations and the lack of services to the health sector. "We send an urgent appeal to the countries of the world to break the blockade in order to operate an air bridge to send emergency medical aid and supplies, especially in the light of the Corona pandemic," he said.

He praised the medical assistance provided by the sisterly countries of the Sultanate of Oman and the Islamic Republic of Iran in light of the suffering of the Yemeni people as a result of the aggression and blockade, calling on countries around the world to follow the attitudes of Oman and Iran in introducing medical aid to Yemen.

For his part, the Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for the Management and Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and International Cooperation Abdul-Mohsen Tawoos called on the UN Secretary-General to remain neutral and take decisive action to lift the blockade on Yemen.

He called on the United Nations to neutralize humanitarian action, indicating that the withdrawal of the organizations as the continuing the siege imposed on Yemen comes within the framework of the implementation of the agenda of the aggression coalition to pressure and subjugate the Yemeni people.

Tawoos emphasized that Sana'a International Airport has become a monopoly of organizations and the Yemeni people do not benefit from it, stressing the keenness to overcome any obstacles facing organizations' work to provide services to the Yemeni people.

He noted that the organizations operating in Yemen are dependent on U.S. political decisions.
