SANAA, Jan. 25 (Saba) - Egypt is today more "dangerous than ever" against opponents who criticize power peacefully "because of the most severe repression and crackdown in the country's modern history," Amnesty International said.
The organization said on Thursday in a statement that intensified repression of opponents made Egypt "more dangerous than ever" to those who criticize the authority peacefully.
"Under the administration of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, Egypt has become a prison for dissidents," the statement said, adding that the Egyptian authorities arrested at least 113 people in 2018 because they "peacefully crossed their views."
The organization's statement came on the eve of the eighth anniversary of the popular uprising in Egypt on January 25, 2011, which overthrew former President Hosni Mubarak.
Sisi had denied in a recent interview with the channel "CBS" American presence of political prisoners in his country.
Egypt has adopted a law that allows authorities to monitor and block the most popular accounts on social media sites if they believe they publish "false news" and arrest human rights activists.
Freedom of expression advocates said the measures were aimed at curbing freedoms on the Internet, which is the only area where opponents of the regime can still express themselves.
The authorities stress that these measures are necessary to "counter terrorism".
