"The members of the committee held a meeting today and agreed to hold the elections on March 24," said an official of the election commission, after Thai King Maha Vajiralongkorn issued a royal decree approving the elections.
"The members of the new House of Representatives and the new government will assume their duties in the middle of this year under a democratic system with His Majesty the King as head of state," Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha office said after the royal decree was issued.
The military government, which controls the country, expressed concern that the date of the King's inauguration ceremony scheduled for May 4 coincides with the announcement of the results of the elections and called for postponement of the elections.
