Geneva – Saba:
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said on Monday that mothers in the Gaza Strip are facing unimaginable challenges to breastfeed their children, as breast milk has become a lifesaving resource for babies , infants amid displacement and lack of safe water.
UNICEF stated in a post on the platform “X,” monitored by the Yemeni News Agency (SABA):
“From bombardment to hunger, mothers in Gaza face unimaginable challenges, especially during times of crisis or conflict. Amid displacement and the absence of safe water, breast milk is a lifeline for children and infants. It is their food security. To continue breastfeeding, mothers need enough nutritious food, safety, and support.”
The organization added: “In Gaza, UNICEF is working on the ground to support mothers and children with supplies and services, but there is an urgent need for a ceasefire and large-scale aid deliveries to protect their health.”
It is noteworthy that cases of malnutrition and famine are arriving every moment at hospitals in Gaza, where 900,000 children suffer from hunger, including 70,000 who have reached the stage of malnutrition.
The Palestinians in Gaza are facing an unprecedented wave of hunger since the Israeli enemy closed the crossings into the Strip early last March and imposed strict restrictions on the entry of food aid, relief supplies, fuel, and medicine.
Over time, Gaza’s residents have exhausted all food resources, shops have become empty, and finding a loaf of bread has become nearly impossible. Meanwhile, the available goods have seen astronomical price increases, making "death by starvation" one of the most brutal causes of death in the Strip.
