Washington – Saba:
Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced today that the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff in the Kremlin was “very productive” and marked by significant progress.
Writing on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated:
“My special envoy Steve Witkoff had a very productive meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Tremendous progress!”
According to Russian state news agency Sputnik, the closed-door talks lasted over three hours and reportedly focused on efforts to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Trump added that he had briefed several European allies following the meeting and emphasized a shared agreement among all parties on the urgent need to end the war:
“Everyone agrees this war must end. We will work toward that goal in the coming days and weeks.”
While no official readout has been released by the Kremlin, Russian officials confirmed that dialogue with Trump’s team is being taken seriously, especially amid shifting geopolitical dynamics and upcoming elections in both the U.S. and Russia.
This marks the first formal diplomatic channel re-established between Trump’s 2024 campaign circle and the Russian leadership, potentially signaling a shift in approach if Trump returns to office in 2025.
