Guterres: What’s happening in Gaza moral crisis challenging conscience of world
[26/ July/2025]
Prague – Saba:

UN Secretary-General António Guterres described on Saturday the situation in Gaza as more than just a humanitarian disaster, calling it “a moral crisis that challenges the conscience of the world.”

In a video address delivered Saturday to the Global Assembly of Amnesty International in the Czech capital, Prague, Guterres stated, “The scale and scope of what we are witnessing in Gaza surpass anything we’ve seen in recent times.”

Quoted by al-Quds Press, Guterres acknowledged that “words do not feed starving children” in Gaza. “I cannot explain the level of indifference and inaction shown by many in the international community. There is a profound lack of compassion, truth, and humanity,” he said.

The UN chief expressed his deep shock over what some Palestinian children are now saying. “Children are talking about wanting to go to heaven because, as they put it, that’s where they’ll finally find food.”

He also drew attention to the tragic situation of UN staff in Gaza, who are starving just like the rest of the population. He stressed that the United Nations “will continue to raise its voice at every opportunity.”

Guterres revealed that the UN has documented the killing of more than 1,000 Palestinians since May 27 while they were trying to obtain food. “They were not killed in clashes or exchanges of fire, but in moments of despair as they searched for food for their families,” he said.

He renewed his call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire and urged for urgent, unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza. Guterres affirmed that the UN “is ready to significantly expand its humanitarian operations in Gaza” as soon as a new ceasefire is reached.

With Western and American backing, the Israeli occupation has been committing acts of genocide in Gaza since October 7, 2023—killing, starving, destroying, and displacing civilians. So far, these acts have resulted in over 59,733 martyrs and 144,477 wounded.
